Zen4 Technical Overview:
In the TECM 5191 – Digital Literacies course, my team was tasked with creating a single-source documentation system using MadCap Flare and Central. Our project focused on updating and organizing technical content for Zen4, a fictional company. One of the key deliverables was the Technical Overview, a foundational topic that introduced users to Zen4’s hardware systems and set the stage for deeper documentation.
Task
Our goal was to design a clear, accessible Technical Overview that could serve multiple audiences – from novice users to technical stakeholders. This required us to:
• Apply structured authoring principles using DITA topic types.
• Integrate the overview into a larger single-source system.
• Ensure consistency in style and formatting using Flare’s stylesheet editor.
• Collaborate in MadCap Central to manage contributions and reviews.
The Technical Overview needed to be both informative and modular, supporting reuse across formats and outputs.
Action
We began by analyzing Zen4’s original content and identifying the Technical Overview as a Concept topic, one that explains systems and relationships rather than procedures or reference data. Using Flare, we built a structured template that included headings, subtopics, and cross-references to related hardware documentation.
To ensure consistency, we customized the stylesheet using guidance from the tutorial MadCap Flare’s Stylesheet Editor for the Total Newbie – Seven CSS Skills You Should Know. This helped us refine font choices, spacing, and layout to improve readability and accessibility.
We also used MadCap Central to synchronize files and submit drafts for instructor review. The “Contribution Templates” feature allowed us to lock formatting while enabling content edits—a technique we learned from MadCap’s documentation on Creating and Sending Contribution Templates.
Throughout the process, we applied insights from Tom Johnson’s article on Single Sourcing and Redundancy to reduce duplication and ensure the Technical Overview could be reused across multiple outputs, including HTML5 and PDF.
Result
The final Technical Overview was published as part of our team’s Zen4 Knowledge Base. It served as a gateway to deeper hardware documentation and demonstrated our ability to apply digital literacies in a real-world context. Key outcomes included:
• A well-structured Concept topic aligned with DITA standards.
• Custom styling for improved user experience.
• Seamless integration into a single-source system.
• Collaborative workflow using MadCap Central.
This project strengthened my skills in structured authoring, content strategy, and self-regulated learning. I took initiative to explore Flare’s advanced features, troubleshoot formatting issues, and contribute meaningfully to team decisions. The Technical Overview stands as a testament to our ability to transform complex information into user-friendly documentation.
